Language is learned most effectively when it is being used for a purpose. By keeping class sizes small and undertaking a comprehensive ‘needs analysis’ on your first day, asking what you hope to achieve with us and how you will use your improved English skills after you have finished your course, we can organise the content of classes effectively so they are tailored to your goals.
We focus students’ attention on language input (reading, listening), language output (writing and speaking), grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. In class, students work individually, in pairs and in small groups. It’s what we call an ‘immersive environment,’ where we’ll encourage you to tell us about examples of English you heard spoken in Edinburgh and then use these real-life examples to help you develop your skills further in the classroom.
Global School’s teachers place great emphasis on learning vocabulary, so you will also be encouraged to read extensively and widely during your course, covering fiction and non-fiction in different media (newspapers, books, online, etc.).
You’ll have weekly assessments with feedback on your progress and we’ll also ask you for your feedback. Please tell us what you would like to do more of or do differently. We try to help you become a more effective language learner by encouraging you to think about your needs and by supporting you in every way we can.
